The story of SUDAR – Society for Upliftment of Downtrodden and Rural Mass begins with the inspiring journey of its founder, Tamilselvi Dhesingh, a woman driven by compassion and a deep commitment to community empowerment and serving society.
Having lived in Karnataka, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu, Tamilselvi had the opportunity to experience diverse cultures, communities, and social realities across India. These experiences opened her eyes to the challenges faced by many underprivileged families—especially women, children, and rural communities who often lacked access to basic healthcare, education initiatives, and social support.
Encouraged and supported by her family and close friends, Tamilselvi developed a strong interest in social service. Her journey into community work began in Chennai, where she started attending Women Self Help Group training sessions and community development programs. What began as a learning experience soon turned into a passion. Through these interactions, she realized the power of collective effort and the importance of empowering women at the grassroots level.
Over time, Tamilselvi became more actively involved in community activities and soon emerged as a mentor and guide for many women, helping them understand their rights, build confidence, and work towards financial independence. Inspired by the impact these efforts created, she decided to take a bigger step.
With the support of like-minded individuals who shared her vision for social change, she founded SUDAR NGO in the year 2000. The organization was established with a clear mission: to uplift marginalized communities through healthcare, education initiatives, and empowerment.
What started as a small initiative with a few dedicated volunteers gradually grew into a meaningful movement. Over the past 25 years, Tamilselvi and her team have worked tirelessly to organize free medical camps, eye camps and cataract surgeries, cancer screening programs, educational support initiatives, and women empowerment activities.
Under her leadership, SUDAR has helped thousands of individuals receive essential medical care, supported hundreds of students in continuing their education, and empowered many women through training, awareness programs, and self-help groups.
Today, SUDAR is not just an organization—it is a growing family of volunteers, supporters, medical professionals, and community members who believe in the power of service and compassion.
Tamilselvi Dhesingh continues to inspire others through her dedication and unwavering belief that true change begins when communities come together to support one another.
Her journey stands as a testament to the idea that one person’s passion to serve can transform countless lives.
"Service to humanity is not just a duty—it is a lifelong commitment to making the world a better place."
